Become a NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer in Lenoir County
Do you enjoy gardening, learning new skills, and giving back to your community? The NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer Program in Lenoir County offers the perfect opportunity to do all three!
What is an Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer?
Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers (EMGVs) are trained community members who work under the direction of NC State Cooperative Extension. They:
- Receive research-based training in horticulture, gardening, landscaping, etc.
- Help answer questions from the public about gardening, lawns, houseplants, and more.
- Volunteer their time to support educational programs, educational gardens, community events, etc.
Opportunities for Volunteers:
- Attend monthly meetings and continue learning year-round.
- Share gardening knowledge at community events.
- Work closely with the horticulture agent on local projects.
- Organize and support plant sales and educational programs.
- Volunteer in native plant garden, children’s gardens, at the senior center, etc.
- Build connections with fellow gardening enthusiasts.
Course Information & Requirements:
- Class Dates: January – March 2027 (Tuesday's from 9 AM – 12 PM)
- Location: Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Center, 1791 Hwy 11, Kinston, NC
- Fee: $175 (covers the handbook, materials, and dues)
- Must not miss more than 2 classes.
- Must have an active email and basic internet skills.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- No prior horticulture experience required—just a willingness to learn!
After the Course Training:
- Complete a 40 hour volunteer internship to become fully certified. (Must be completed by December 2027.)
- Stay active by completing 20 volunteer hours and 10 hours of continuing education each year.
How to Apply:
- Attend an Informational Session – Must attend 1 to be considered for the course.
- Dates: TBA for November and December
- Location: N.C. Cooperative Extension, Lenoir County Center.
