Become a NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer in Lenoir County


Do you enjoy gardening, learning new skills, and giving back to your community? The NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer Program in Lenoir County offers the perfect opportunity to do all three!

What is an Extension Master Gardener


 Volunteer?


Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers (EMGVs) are trained community members who work under the direction of NC State Cooperative Extension. They:

  • Receive research-based training in horticulture, gardening, landscaping, etc.

  • Help answer questions from the public about gardening, lawns, houseplants, and more.

  • Volunteer their time to support educational programs, educational gardens, community events, etc.


Opportunities for Volunteers:


  • Attend monthly meetings and continue learning year-round.

  • Share gardening knowledge at community events.

  • Work closely with the horticulture agent on local projects.

  • Organize and support plant sales and educational programs.

  • Volunteer in native plant garden, children’s gardens, at the senior center, etc.

  • Build connections with fellow gardening enthusiasts.


Course Information & Requirements:


  • Class Dates: January 13 – March 31, 2026 (Tuesday's from 9 AM – 12 PM)

  • Location: Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Center, 1791 Hwy 11, Kinston, NC

  • Fee: $175 (covers the handbook, materials, and dues)

  • Must not miss more than 2 classes.

  • Must have an active email and basic internet skills.

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

  • No prior horticulture experience required—just a willingness to learn!


After the Course Training:


  • Complete a 40 hour volunteer internship to become fully certified. (Must be completed by December 2026.)

  • Stay active by completing 20 volunteer hours and 10 hours of continuing education each year.

  1. Attend an Informational Session – Must attend 1 to be considered for the course.

  • Dates: Nov. 18, Dec. 16, or Jan. 6 at 10 AM

  • Location: N.C. Cooperative Extension, Lenoir County Center.
