County Animal Response Team

The County Animal Response Team was created after Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Both Lenoir and Greene Counties had hundreds of domestic animals and livestock that were lost or homeless. Thousands of livestock were dead and had to be buried. Extension, county government and local volunteers banded together to put together a plan of action for emergencies involving animals.

In 2007, the Federal Stafford Act mandated that all local governments make provisions for pets during emergency situations. It has become obvious that people will not leave their homes unless they can take their pets with them. Lenoir County Cooperative Extension, Lenoir County Emergency Services, and Lenoir County Community College will have an emergency pet shelter available at the College during Hurricanes.

Pet Shelter Donations

Currently there is no funding available for the formation of this Emergency Pet Shelter. We are seeking supplies and donations from the community to help make this effort successful. Below is a list of needed items. Feel free to drop these items off at the Lenoir County Extension Office. Thank you for your support!!

Pet Cages and/or Crates- especially large and extra large sizes

Food and Water Bowls

Litter Boxes

Leashes
